Another "Slumdog" Child Star's Home Destroyed

Mumbai authorities strike again.

The shanty home of Slumdog Millionaire star Rubina Ali was demolished around 11 a.m. today in a sweep of slum houses that were in the way of a planned pedestrian overpass.

The 9-year-old, who played the child version of Latika in the Oscar-winning film, now worries what she and her family will do without a home.

"I'm feeling bad," she told the Associated Press. "I'm thinking about where to sleep."

According to family members, Ali's father was beaten by 10 police officers for 15 minutes before the demolition occurred.

Ali's co-star, 10-year-old Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, suffered a similar fate last week when his home was also bulldozed.

Slumdog director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson have donated $747,500 to charity to help slum kids in Mumbai and have set up a trust to ensure the children in the film get proper homes and receive an education. The trust offered to rent the families apartments while they search for permanent homes, but so far the parents have refused, claiming they would rather stay where they are than move to a temporary space.
