The Westboro Baptist Church is threatening to picket the funeral of Elizabeth Taylor.
According to TMZ, Margie Phelps, daughter of Westboro Baptist Church pastor Fred Phelps, announced that the church is going to picket Liz’s funeral. She explained herself by saying that Liz was a gay “enabler” and an AIDS activist.
MSNBC reports the U.S. Supreme Court ruled earlier this month that the Westboro congregation was protected by the First Amendment after its members protested at the funeral of a Marine who died in Iraq.
Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), tells E! Online, “Fred Phelps and his vitriolic anti-gay followers are simply trying to exploit their so-called ‘faith’ by spreading messages of hate at a time when Americans are grieving the loss of an extraordinary woman, actress, and advocate.”
Elizabeth Taylor died Wednesday at the age of 79 after being sick for some time. The two-time Oscar winner co-founded the American Foundation of AIDS Research, or amFAR.
