'Asteroids' to Become A Feature Film
Though it had been bidding in competition with three other studios, Universal has won the rights to a feature-length film adaptation of the classic Atari video game "Asteroids."
Lorenzo di Bonaventura will be producing the film. Bonaventura has some experience working with such nostalgic 80s franchises, as he is currently wrapping up work on "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra."
The original "Asteroids" game, released in 1979, had no plot whatsoever. Gameplay simply consisted of a triangular shape placed in the middle of the screen, which must spin around to shoot incoming asteroids and the occasional starship in an effort to avoid any collisions. Due to the lack of narrative, an original story must be created. Matthew Lopez, whose recent works include "Bedtime Stories" and "Race to Witch Mountain", will write.
