Autopsy Results for Ex-Wilco Member Revealed

Ex-member of Wilco, Jay Bennett, died of a drug overdose, according to coroner's reports.

Illinois coroner Duane Northrop concluded that the 45-year-old died from an overdose of fentanyl, a drug that is commonly given to treat chronic pain. Fentanyl is said to be 100 times stronger than morphine. Bennett was declared dead on May 24 after being found dead in his Urbana, Illinois home. Authorities are deeming the incident an accident.

Bennett was a sound engineer and played a variety of instruments for Wilco from 1994-2001. However, Bennett departed from the group after a fallout with the band's leader, Jeff Tweedy. In early May, Bennett sued his former bandmates for $50,000 for back royalties on songs that he worked on while still a member of Wilco.

According to the Huffington Post, upon learning news of his death, Tweedy remarked on the substantial contributions Bennett made to Wilco and said that he would be remembered "as a truly unique and gifted human being." However, thus far, none of Bennett's former bandmates have commented on the news of the cause of his death.
