Avatar Has Sunk ‘Titanic's’ Record
Director James Cameron has broken his own record. His 3D wonder, Avatar, has officially become the highest-grossing domestic box office film ever, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Avatar has brought in $601.1 million, surpassing Cameron’s Titanic, which grossed $600.8 million in 1998. Factor in another $1.48 billion for international earnings, and the grand total for Avatar equals $2.08 billion. Keep in mind that the total has been cushioned with extra charges for 3D tickets and inflated ticket prices compared to those in 1998.
However, Avatar did not manage to become the highest ticket-seller in movie history. Gone with the Wind, 1939, is still holding tightly to that title.
Like Titanic and Gone with the Wind, Avatar has not only been wildly popular among moviegoers, but critically acclaimed as well. Yesterday, it received nine Oscar nominations.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, News Corp. Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch was asked about a potential Avatar sequel and responded that the Fox parent is “pushing for one.” It would be another chance for Cameron to create the highest ticket-seller.
