'Avatar' Helps Imax

The release of the blockbuster helped raise Imax's annual profits significantly.

Thanks in part to the release of big name movies like, Avatar, Imax Corp. is expected to make it’s first annual profit in four years, according to The Boston Herald.

The company recorded a $33 million loss in 2008, but has already grossed $150 million from ticket sales to Avatar, which was a big reason why the company was able to be successful this year.

"Imax was a place where I’d take my kids on Sunday if I wanted to see a movie about whales or the Antarctic,” chairman of Paramount Pictures, Brad Grey told the Boston Herald of the types of movies Imax use to show. Now he thinks, “it has become an almost essential part of releasing a blockbuster."

Imax is going to keep releasing big name movies in hopes that it will continue to beat out other 3D screens.

“As Avatar has shown, we are the venue of choice," Greg Foster of Imax’s president of filmed entertainment told The Boston Herald.
