"Avatar" May Break "Titanic" Records

James Cameron’s newest film, "Avatar", may surpass another one of his films, "Titanic".

This week marked the fifth week in a row that Avatar was number one at the box office. While there were two new movies out this weekend as competitors, The Book Of Eli and The Lovely Bones, Avatar still made $54.6 million last week throughout the U.S. and Canada.

As well as a huge weekend in North America, Avatar had another big weekend across the world, making $129 million from 112 different territories.

Avatar has grossed $1.12 billion internationally and $505.1 million domestically as of Monday. The current record for biggest box office movie worldwide is Cameron’s Titanic, making $1.24 billion. However, if Avatar keeps up its sales, it is likely that it will surpass Titanic in the upcoming weeks.

However, just because Avatar may break box office records, it is not to say that more people have seen the movie. Titanic was released in 1997, and 13 years ago ticket prices were a lot less. Avatar has sold less than 70 million tickets between the U.S. and Canada, whereas Titanic sold more than 125 million tickets.

James Cameron won a Golden Globe Sunday night for Best Director for Avatar, and the film also took home the award for Best Movie- Drama.
