James Cameron's Avatar is proving to have just about as much staying power as his unsinkable ship. The movie is set to be first for the third weekend in a row after coming out on top this past Friday.
The 3-D science fantasy adventure that may change the way movies are made took in $25 million New Year's Day, pushing its total to $308.8 million in just 15 days. Only two other films have surpassed $300 million in a shorter time: The Dark Knight in ten days and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in fourteen. It should be noted, however, that the winter storm hammering the east coast during Avatar's opening weekend is speculated to have taken away significant first-days sales.
Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (I cringe every time I hear that title) have been switching off second place for the last few days, with the former coming out on top with $14.9 million. The Squeakquel took third with $13 million. It's Complicated hasn't moved up or down since its release: a solid fourth.
The world of Pandora is expected to earn more than $800 million in total international sales this weekend and shows no signs of slowing down.
