Walt Disney Studios announced Thursday that the upcoming film The Avengers will be released May 4 in 3D.
The film was originally set to only be released in 2D.
The 3D release of the film will come one month after Titanic (1997) hits theaters in 3D to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ship’s tragic sinking.
Disney also announced that an untitled Marvel-character-based movie in the works will be released April 4, 2014 from its original June 27, 2014.
The Amazing Spider-Man, from Columbia Pictures, will also be released in 3D on July 3.
The Avengers stars Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson. The title characters are superheroes who team up to save the world.
It was written and directed by Joss Whedon, who is known for creating the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff Angel.
"I don't know who doesn't know about The Avengers, at this point," Disney's distribution chief, Dave Hollis said. "It will be an absolute phenomenon.”
Disney also announced that its upcoming animated film Frozen will released in 3D and 2D on Nov. 27, 2013. The studio described the film as a fairy tale but no other details were released.
