Back to the Bright Side of Life: Town Lifts 30-Year Ban on "Life of Brian"
After three decades of being banned from the Welsh town of Aberystwyth, Monty Python returns. The 1979 comedy, The Life of Brian, had been banned for being blasphemous and hurting people's religious feelings.
Now, the movie, by infamous comedy brigade Monty Python, will finally be shown again at a charity event on March 28, BBC reports.
The town's mayor, Sue Jones-Davies, who starred in the movie herself as Brian's girlfriend long before she entered politics, had championed the film's showing.
"I talked to officials at the town council to check if it was appropriate to show the film and we thought, why not, the proceeds are going to charity," she said.
Jones-Davis will be joined by fellow cast members Terry Jones and Michael Palin on March 28: "I asked Terry if he would like to come to the screening and he said, 'shall I ask Michael?' I said yes and then Michael agreed."
Aberystwyth wasn't the only town back in 1979 to protest the movie's release. The story about a Jewish contemporary of Jesus who was mistaken for the messiah and crucified boiled the blood of many religious groups. Screenings were picketed in the USA, and the movie was outright banned in all of Ireland and Norway.
