It's clear that Disney's classic Beauty and the Beast is well-loved by Disney fans. It proved its worth once with its success at the box office in 1991 in its debut, and again with a revamped 3D version that hit theaters earlier this month. So it was no surprise when the CW network, which caters to a younger female audience, ordered a pilot based on the story.
Just one week after the CW announced its plans for the show, Entertainment Weekly reported that ABC has also announced that it has also ordered a pilot based on the film. The show will be a remaining of the classic story, set in a darker and more dangerous world where a princess discovers she has an unlikely connection to a beast.
The shows are both on trend for the year, as several networks have already had success this season with shows loosely based around fairytales. NBC's Grimm and ABC's Once Upon a Time have both somewhat paved the way for more shows like the Beauty and the Beast adaptations.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Human Target's Jonathan E. Steinberg is set to write the show and will presumably feature an older heroin and a more mature story line than the CW's version, which is loosely based on the 1980s drama that starred Linda Hamilton.
There is still no guarantee that either show will make it to a full series order, but it will be interesting to see the choices the different networks make, how each network will interpret the story and most importantly, who will have the hotter Beast.
