Beckham’s Torn Left Achilles Will Keep Him out of World Cup
During Sunday’s matchup between AC Milan and Chievo Verona, international football star David Beckham sustained a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left leg and the injury will prevent him from competing in his fourth World Cup. Beckham had been playing on-loan for AC Milan from the MLS’ Los Angeles Galaxy in order to secure his position on England’s World Cup squad and his injury has certainly dealt a substantial blow to their chances in the tournament, which is slated to begin on June 11th in South Africa.
According to The Associated Press, Beckham arrived in Finland on Monday morning where he will undergo surgery to repair his torn left Achilles’ tendon. Although an official announcement has not been made in regards to Beckham’s status for the 2010 World Cup, a medical expert who is knowledgeable about Beckham’s injury has revealed that it will undoubtedly prevent him from competing in the tournament.
Beckham has released a statement to address his fans in response to his unfortunate injury which reads, “I am upset but want to thank everyone for their messages of support. I hope to make a swift and full recovery.”
England coach Fabio Capello has commented publicly on the loss of Beckham, saying, “David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it will be a big blow.”
