Ben Stiller Flick Causes Controversy
Ben Stiller's portrayal of a mentally challenged character in the new movie "Tropic Thunder", has left some groups deeply offended, WENN reports.
In the film, Stiller plays an actor who takes on the role of a persona named Simple Jack. In the movie's promotional materials, however, the character is referred to as a "retard", and this description alone already had some disability groups up in arms.
However, Stiller's portrayal added more fuel to the fire, as many found it offensive and ridiculing. "We want to be really plain about what our issues are with the movie," said Anne Sommers from the American Association of People with Disabilities.
Many had protested to bosses at DreamWorks Studios and the company - who insists that they did not mean any harm towards the disabled and were just poking fun at the film industry - has agreed to meet with the Association to discuss any concerns.
