Bono and Hirst Raise $42 Million
ABC News reports Bono and British artist Damien Hirst combined forces and held an exclusive art auction to raise money for AIDS in Africa.
The event, which raised more than $42 million, was inspired by Bono's RED campaign and featured contributions of artwork from the world's leading artists.
The benefit was held at Sotheby's in New York and attracted celebrities such as Martha Stewart, Russell Simmons, and Christy Turlington.
"It went well beyond what anyone could have hoped ... I've been a fan of Damien's ... and I just think there's great vision in him and in his work, but I couldn't have anticipated that these artists would come in behind him," Bono told ABC News.
According to People, the night's highest priced item was Hirst's medicine cabinet called "Where There's a Will There's a Way," which sold for $7.15 million.
"Damien Hirst's medicine cabinet is so striking because he's made pills a centerpiece of his work for years. And now the idea that these pills have gone from being a work of art to providing real pills for people who will die without them is very poetic to me," Bono said of Hirst's artwork.
There was only one piece that did not sell because it failed to meet the minimum reserve price, according to The New York Times.
