Booker T's Soul Turns to Rock

Booker T. Jones is making music again, rock music.

Keyboardist, arranger, and producer Booker T. Jones helped create the Memphis soul sound. Today, he is making a new sound according to CNN.

Jones's work was used in records from Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, and his own Booker T. and the MGs. He arranged and co-wrote songs such as "Born Under a Bad Sign" and "Big Bird."

Jones talked about how the technology of the contemporary recording studio made him feel separated from the music industry he loved.

"I had to reeducate myself about recording. I was pretty analog old-school record guy. I found myself, four or five years ago, unable to walk into a studio," said Jones.

Since then, Jones has been taking courses at a university in San Francisco, and has decided to record for the first time in 20 years. His new album, Potato Hole, is much more hard rock than anything he's produced before.

"This is rock. This is part of Booker T. you haven't seen before," said Jones.
