Brad Pitt Builds Up Ninth Ward
Acclaimed actor and philanthropist Brad Pitt has stepped up reconstruction in still dismal New Orleans. Many remain homeless years after the wrath of Hurricane Katrina, but thanks to Pitt, six families moved into brand new homes in the Ninth Ward. Pitt financed the construction of six homes with funds from his "Make It Right" foundation, which was launched a year ago and plans to build 150 energy-efficient homes in the most damaged areas of New Orleans.
Although the six homes are a nice start, Pitt says, it's a "push-and-pull" scenario. According to the Associated Press, Brad Pitt told reporters "The excitement is that it's being proven, that it's working. The frustration is that we have a long way to go." At present, two other homes are under construction with 14 more set to break ground in early 2009. "You're going to see 100 homes here, mark my words. It's nice to see a few, but I'm anxious to see 100, 150, 1,000." Brad Pitt also added that the Lower 9th Ward will become the largest "green" living development in the United States.
Brad Pitt and his partner Angelina Jolie were in New Orleans for the debut of Pitt's new movie, "The Curious case of Benjamin Button," which was in part filmed in the city.
