Bringing Back the Art of Film

Scorsese helps to restore old movies

Movie director Martin Scorsese is the founder of the World Cinema Foundation (WCF); foundation that collects and restores rare and fragile films from around the world for preservation. According to the Times Online The WCF digitally remastered the double Oscar-winning film "Red Shoes" and last night it was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Scorsese said that it is important that more people watch "art" films and not just big blockbuster movies. He said that this would help to spread the trend of making more artistic films as oppose to studios only producing blockbuster hits. These films restored by the WCF will be available online at theauteurs.com according to the New York Times. The restored movies will also be released for festivals, museums and universities to help people broaden their understanding of cinema. According to Reuters Scorsese said that almost 90 percent of U.S. silent movies are gone from the deterioration of their master copies. These preserved titles will also be made available through DVD.
