Over the weekend, it was reported that the home of Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack was being investigated after the Department of Health Services for LA County and the coroner’s office opened an inquiry. According to msnbc.com, law enforcement officials found mold in Murphy and Monjack’s home and they believe it may have been a contributing factor in their untimely deaths.
Murphy, an actress who starred in films such as Girl, Interrupted and 8 Mile, died on December 20, 2009 as a result of anemia, pneumonia and multiple prescription medication intoxication. Her widower, British filmmaker Simon Monjack, was found dead on May 23, 2010 from pneumonia and severe anemia.
However, according to people.com, Murphy’s mother, Sharon, is vehemently denying the allegations that toxic mold may have contributed to her daughter’s death. Sharon Murphy described the investigation that is being carried out by the Department of Health Services for Los Angeles County and the coroner’s office as “absurd.”
Although various media sources initially claimed that she would be flying home from Europe to be close to the investigation, Murphy told People magazine, “I have never been personally asked by the coroner or anyone from the Health Department to come and inspect my home for mold. I have and will continue to be very cooperative and fully comply with any such request.”
Her attorney, Michael Schiff, released a statement that reads, “To the best of my knowledge, there has been no evidence of mold at the Murphy residence. An unidentified representative from the LA County Health Department denied reports that a black mold investigation is taking place.
