Broadway Musical about Lennon Closes
Just six weeks after the show's opening, the Broadway Musical about John Lennon, former Beatle and pop music icon, will run for the last time September 24.
Yoko Ono, Lennon's widow, helped create the musical flop. Problems with the play started early, including a postponed opening night, major rewrites and more than half-empty theater seats.
Don Scardino wrote and directed the show, but New York Times criticized the portrayal of Lennon as "Ono-centric," meaning Yoko Ono's influence over the musical played a role in the dislike for the show.
Newsday's critic wrote, "This is John Lennon as filtered through the protective, selective, later-life self-interest of Yoko Ono Lennon." In addition, the New York Post said the show was "so shaky it can scarcely stagger from one side of the stage to another."
