Broadway's "Young Frankenstein" Closing

Mel Brooks musical shuts down in January.

The Broadway musical, Young Frankenstein, based on the 1974 Mel Brooks film, will play its final performance on Jan. 4, Playbill announced.

The musical is the latest of many Broadway shows closing in the new year. Hairspray, Spamalot, and Spring Awakening posted closing notices for January in recent weeks.

The original cast of Young Frankenstein included Roger Bart (Desperate Housewives), Megan Mullally (Will & Grace), Sutton Foster (Broadway's Thoroughly Modern Millie). Young Frankenstein won an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical earlier this year.

Brooks wrote the score for the musical as well as co-wrote the book with Thomas Meehan. Susan Stroman directed the musical. This is the same team that worked with Brooks on his first smash musical, The Producers, which ran five years and won the most Tony Awards in Broadway history.

When it closes, Young Frankenstein will have played 30 preview performances and 484 regular performances. The musical will live on in a national tour, set to kick off in September 2009.
