Brokaw to "Meet the Press" Through Elections

NBC has chosen Tom Brokaw to succeed Russert's position as "Meet the Press" host through the 2008 presidential elections.

Finding a replacement for Tim Russert has not been easy, as NBC has struggled thus far to find an anchor who can emulate Russert's style and presence.

After a temporary arrangement that saw network news anchor Brian Williams function as Russert's replacement, the network announced that it arrived at a more long-term solution: anchor Tom Brokaw.

According to the Philadelphia Enquirer, Brokaw will function as moderator for Meet the Press through the November elections. The decision was made official through Williams's announcement yesterday. Brokaw is expected to begin his duties next week.

NBC News president Steve Capus made his excitement over Brokaw's decision clear, telling the Associated Press that he is "thrilled" Brokaw is taking the job.

When asked what prompted Brokaw to assume Russert's position, Capus replied that the decision was made as a tribute to the former Meet the Press host. This would make sense, considering that Brokaw and Russert are close friends; in fact, Brokaw gave the opening remarks during Russert's Kennedy Center Memorial.

Brokaw plans to continue Russert's style of detailed and focused questioning and analysis, but made it clear that while the show's methods will remain permanent, his position as host may not.

According to the Associated Press, Brokaw plans to assume this position "until they can find someone who can take it over on a permanent basis."
