Brokeback Big at BAFTAs
Film critics the world over just don't know how to quit "Brokeback Mountain."
The gay Western picked up four honors Sunday at the British Film Academy awards or "BAFTAs."
"Brokeback" picked up Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and (in a surprise) Best Supporting Actor for Jake Gyllenhaal.
Over on this side of the pond, Heath Ledger is said to be a major contender for Best Actor. But in Britain, he applauded for Philip Seymour Hoffman's win for portraying neurotic genre-bender Truman Capote in "Capote." And Michelle Williams, favored as Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Brokeback" as a jilted spouse, lost at the BAFTAs to Thandie Newton (a Brit herself) for the Los Angeles race drama "Crash." As at the SAG awards, Reese Witherspoon pocketed Best Actress for her role as June Carter Cash in "Walk the Line."
The biggest surprise of the night, though, went to "Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit," which emerged from the "children's film" label to best "The Constant Gardener" for Best British Film of the Year. "Wallace and Gromit" is also up for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
The Academy Awards will take place in two short weeks on March 5, live from Los Angeles' Kodak Theatre at 8PM EST.
