Brooke Shields' Fight with National Enquirer
The National Enquirer is no friend of today's Hollywood celebrity. However, one reporter, photographer duo allegedly claimed to be friends with Teri Shields, Brooke Shields' 75-year-old mother, when they checked her out of her New Jersey nursing home last month. The reporter and photographer, said to be working for the National Enquirer, reportedly drove Shields around to fish for a story under the guise of "running errands." The tabloid responded by saying that their reporters and the elderly Shields have been friends for more than 10 years and that their reporters weren't on assignment at the time.
Old Tappan Police notified Brooke Shields that her mother, who suffers from dementia, had been signed out of the facility.
As a child actor, Brooke Shields' mother managed her career, but also did her best to shield her from the dirt and politics of the business. Now, the child actor who has grown into a prominent actress is the one trying to protect her ailing mother.
Shields had police investigate the disturbing situation and threatened legal remedies for what may well have been a kidnapping motivated by a shop-counter tabloid's desire for a story. Due to the circumstances, Shields was forced to reveal her mother's condition, adding further embarrassment to this debauchery.
In a statement from Shields' attorney Gerald B. Lefcourt in People magazine, he announced that the National Enquirer did not publish a story. On the legal side of the equation, Shields has come to an agreement with the tabloid to drop any planned charges in exchange for a large donation to be made to dementia research, as well as a public apology.
