Bruno Might Not Be as Successful as "Borat"
It looks like new movie "Bruno" won't be a hit for Universal Theaters. In its opening weekend, the numbers looked impressive, but compared to the 2006 release of "Borat," the R-rated film is not up to par.
According to the New York Times, the Sacha Baron Cohen film was released in three times as many theaters as "Borat" and only brought in an average of $11,040 per theater, while "Borat" brought in an average $31,607 per theater. That was over two times more than "Bruno."
Also according to the New York Times, it looks like Universal was looking for this film to be their summer hit, considering the disappointing ticket sales for other movies released earlier this year. Those films include "Land of the Lost" and "Public Enemies."
The Times also reports that "Bruno" was No. 1 in North American theaters over the weekend with estimated ticket sales of $30.4 million, according to box office tracking services. "Borat," which carried the formal subtitle, "Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," opened to $26.5 million in 2006 and went on to gross $128.5 million domestically.
