Bush invites "American Idol" finalists to White House

The "Idol" contestants will visit the president when their tour stops in Washington, D.C.

President Bush will host the Top 10 "American Idol" finalists at the White House when the "American Idol Live" tour stops in the nation's capitol July 28, the White House said Friday.

Season five winner Taylor Hicks and the other finalists will get a tour of the estate before meeting with the president. It is not known whether runner-up Katharine McPhee, who was sidelined from the tour by laryngitis, will be attending. Their visit will be the first time "Idol" contestants have been invited to the White House by the president, who was in Colorado this week for a Republican fundraiser.

Hicks secured the "American Idol" title by receiving 63 million votes from viewers across the country, 4 million more votes than Bush received in winning the presidency. However, "Idol" voters are allowed to vote more than once for their favorite contestant.

Susan Whitson, Laura Bush's press secretary, knows Hicks personally as his ninth grade English teacher.
