Cafe Weekly. Kanye West: Hip Hop's Humiliation

Sarah Folmar
How one performer ruined his image by humiliating America's princess.

My 5-year-old nephew started kindergarten last week, and had to learn some of life's most valuable lessons. When he spoke out of turn and was scolded, his entitled attitude on life quickly changed with the realization that he must raise his hand in order to speak in class. Maybe Kanye West skipped a grade or two, happened to miss out on these kinds of lessons or was just too full of himself to learn common decency towards others.

At Sunday's Video Music Awards, presented by MTV, Taylor Swift won the first award of the night for, "Best Female Video." As most of America either watched live or later saw on the news outlets, West abruptly stole the stage and proclaimed his love for Beyonce's video over Swift's win. By completely stealing the shine away from the deserving young star and mortifying a stunned Beyonce, West proved to the world that he is truly an egomaniacal waste of talent. When Beyonce won the coveted award for "Video of the Year," she had the decency to invite Swift to the stage to finish her original speech. The two shared a hug and rose even higher in their stardom due to West's ridiculous move.

Supporters of West have been sympathetic toward his incident considering all of his apologies this week. Rolling Stone reported that he wrote an apology on his blog shortly after being asked to leave the VMAs. This apology included how sorry he was, but was interrupted by how he still thought that Beyonce did have the best video. He finally took his tail out from between his legs and apologized to Swift personally on Tuesday after her appearance on, "The View." The night before his personal condolences were sent, West spoke to Jay Leno about his tirade. He did seem sincere in his short time on the show, but many minds seemed to already be set on the opinions of West.

This was not the first immature tantrum the artist has thrown during his career. Fans have watched him at other awards shows speak his mind when he hasn't won awards, and when artists won whom he doesn't believe should have won in the first place. We can't forget his words after Hurricane Katrina either, considering he called-out the president for not caring about African Americans. Supporters of this theory were glad West spoke on the issue, but during a concert to provide relief to the victims may not have been the best outlet.

Now that West has gotten so much negative feedback for his actions, maybe he will take time out of his busy talent-bashing schedule to mature into a real adult. We have dealt with his childish ways for quite some time, and it gives me great pleasure to see this artist finally reap what he has sown for so long. Thank you Kanye West for giving an example to us all of how not to become the most narcissistic person in America.

My 5-year-old nephew calls ridiculous people, "Really Dickus." Considering that I find Kanye West to be a ridiculous person, these are now my sentiments exactly.
