It appears that Herman Cain, potential presidential candidate for the Republican party, has kept his wife in the dark about his friendly relationship with Ginger White.
Cain announced Thursday that his wife, Gloria Cain, did not know of his friendship with White or that he was helping White monetarily.
In a meeting with the New Hampshire Union Leader, Cain explained that he had aided White financially, helping out with her "month to month expenses and bills."
White, an Atlanta business woman, claims that she and Cain had an extramarital affair lasting 13 years. Cain asserted that his relationship with White was a platonic one.
White contacted Cain via text message, sending him 70 messages this fall, all reportedly asking for monetary assistance.
“She was out of work and had trouble paying her bills and I had known her as a friend,” Cain maintained. “She wasn’t the only friend who I had helped in these tough economic times, and so her messages to me were relating to ‘need money for rent’ or whatever the case may be. I don’t remember all the specifics.”
The strain of these allegations could be enough to cause Cain to withdraw from the presidential race. He plans on speaking to his wife in person about the allegations on Friday and from there he will reassess whether to proceed as a presidential candidate.
