Canadian Idol Won't Return in 2009

Singing competition shelved due to economy.

The economic crisis shows no sign of stopping and television across the border is feeling it as well.

The Associated Press reports that Canadian Idol, Canada's take on American Idol, will not return for season seven due to the slowing economy.

CTV, the network that airs the show, says it is being put on hold for now and not canceled.

Some of the reasons behind the decision were that the reality competition costs a lot to produce and advertising revenues are expected to drop significantly.

The sixth season of Canadian Idol was completed in the fall. It was a ratings powerhouse and racked up an average of 1.47 million viewers in September.

CTV also said that Canadian Idol isn't the only "Idol" show to take a break between seasons. Other international versions have done so as well.
