Canadian Women's Hockey Team Under Fire for Medal Celebration

IOC is investigating.

Thursday night, the gold-medal winning Canadian female hockey team celebrated their victory by chugging beer and smoking cigars on the ice. The IOC is not pleased, reports Yahoo!.

At least one player who was drinking in front of the cameras, 18-year-old Marie-Philip Poulin, was underage (the drinking age in Canada is 19). The on-ice party went on for over an hour after the game. Fans had left, but the media remained.

The IOC's executive director of the Games, Gilbert Felli, described the incident as "not what we want to see" from Olympic athletes. The International Hockey Federation and Canadian Olympic Committee will both be looking into the actions, and the IOC has asked them to "act accordingly."

Spokesman for the COC Steve Keough told the AP: “We condone celebrations. … We don’t condone actions of irresponsibility. I think Canadians understand it’s quite an emotional moment for our team. It was not our intention to go against any IOC protocols.”

Canada scored over 40 goals in the qualifying rounds of just three games, and only gave up two; the US scored 31 and gave up one. Both teams were the only ones in the first round with a positive goal differential.
