With less than a month away before the release of the latest Marvel movie Captain America: The First Avenger, there are already talks about a sequel.
According to Superhero Hype the screenwriter duo, Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, are currently in negotiations to write Captain America 2.
After speaking at a panel for the Los Angeles Film Festival’s “Coffee Talk”, Screen Junkies had a chance to interview McFeely, who had much to say about America’s favorite Super Soldier.
The first movie will deal with Steve Rogers’ origin and his early missions as Captain America. Fans suspect that the movie will end with Steve Rogers ultimately being frozen in ice, so that in The Avengers, Captain America will come into modern day.
There is always room to go back to WWII in the sequel. McFeely commented, “There is hope is that there is room and we’re negotiating how to do that now. The story [for Part 2] will likely be in the present day. We’re experimenting with flashback elements for more period World War II stuff.” Gaps were purposely left in Captain America to make room for more adventures than just the one you’re going to see in the first movie.
The screenwriters are negotiating with producers for a sequel. McFeely commented about being at Marvel last week: “We’re talking and passing stuff back and forth all the time. They just sent me a big PDF file of comics.” A lot of freedom has been given for their first draft, and from there, the movie will require a lot of tweaking.
Producers have made notes for M.O.D.O.K. to be a possible villain in part 2, but there is no confirmation, as it is still undetermined whether or not the big, evil floating head will appear in the sequel. In the latest trailer, however, the terrorist organization Hydra has a definite presence.
Marvel has been making comics for over 70 years. There are approximately 5,000 characters to choose from. Besides The Avengers movie, other film possibilities include a Luke Cage movie and Iron Fist. However, McFeely says before producers can decide on which characters to bring to the big screen, they must consider risk vs. reward.
Captain America: The First Avenger hits 3D and 2D theaters on July 22. Directed by Joe Johnston, the action adventure stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Hugo Weaving, Sebastian Stan, Toby Jones, Samuel L. Jackson, Dominic Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, Neal McDonough and Derek Luke.
