Kal Penn may have stoner comedy Harold & Kumar on his resume, but his past employment record also boasts "associate director of the office of public engagement," which sounds like a bit part in a political thriller but is actually a real-life stint he did with President Obama.
Penn left Fox's House for the White House job back in 2009, but now he's returning to the small screen for an upcoming recurring role on How I Met Your Mother.
And, no, he won't be playing the titular maternal figure.
Instead, Cinema Blend reports that Penn will play a possible love interest for Cobie Smulders' Robin.
TV Line confirms that Penn is on board to play a character named Kevin, who catches the eye of the single-and-ready-to-mingle news anchor.
Other details are scant, as they usually are with the tight-lipped CBS comedy, but executive producer Craig Thomas told TV Line that Penn's character could be a gateway for Robin to return to the dating scene, something she "didn’t do a hell of a lot of" last season because her story line was more focused on her career.
Penn's How I Met Your Mother stint will reunite him with Harold & Kumar co-star Neil Patrick Harris. The duo will also appear in the upcoming A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, which hits theaters November 4.
Meanwhile, How I Met Your Mother returns for its seventh season September 9.
