CBS first network to simulcast evening news on Web
Although other major networks have featured newscasts online in various forms, CBS announced Thursday it will be the first to simulcast its evening news on the Web when Katie Couric's new program airs Sept. 5.
CBS News President Sean McManus says the simulcast is a step toward reaching the Internet audience, which he claims is different from the television viewers. Those who are unable to watch the news on television, such as people stuck at work or in traffic, will benefit from the online broadcast.
"I think it could help us potentially grow our audience," McManus said.
While other networks have been reluctant to simulcast news programs out of fear of losing television audiences, McManus said to worried affiliates those who prefer watching the news on TV will continue doing so.
"It makes sense if you have access to a television, why would you want to watch it on computer?" McManus said.
CBS said online viewers will register to watch the broadcast in order to prevent them from seeing the program before it airs in their local area.
ABC airs "World News" an afternoon program online different from the evening broadcast, while NBC replays its news on the Web after it has aired throughout the country.
