Censors Retreat on "Hustle and Flow"s Nominated Song
Looks like the Oscars are ready for rap after all.
After a battle with the censors about possibly profane lyrics, the Academy and ABC have reached a deal over the first-ever rap performance on the show, allowing some, but not all, of the curse words in the original.
Mirroring the 1996 performance of "Blame Canada" from "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut," in which Robin Williams replaced the nearly ubiquitous F-word with "fart," the rap group Three 6 Mafia, which performed "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" for the movie "Hustle & Flow," will perform a slightly altered version for the Oscar ceremony.
The film's aspiring rap star (played by Terrence Howard) composes the song in homage to his occupation. Actress Taraji P. Henson, who performed along with Howard in the film, will perform with Three 6 Mafia on the show.
2003's Oscar winner Eminem was a no-show at the ceremony, and the song "Lose Yourself" from "8 Mile" was not performed there.
