Chelsea Handler disclosed that she had an abortion when she was a teenager and also expressed her disdain for reality shows such as Bravo’s Real Housewives series and MTV’s Teen Mom during a recent interview.
“I had an abortion when I was 16,” she told The New York Times. “Because that’s what I should have done. Otherwise I would now have a 20-year-old kid. Anyway, those are things that people shouldn’t be dishonest about.”
The outspoken comedienne did not pull any punches when it comes to her opinion of teen pregnancy shows, saying, “We’re seeking out such grossness in human behavior and want such mindless entertainment.”
Handler continued, “The Real Housewives of Atlanta and some of these other shows are more racist. Or 16 and Pregnant. Getting rewarded for being pregnant when you’re a teenager? Are you serious? That makes me want to kill somebody.”
Not only does Handler host E!’s Chelsea Lately and star in its spin-off show, After Lately, but she is also set to star in NBC’s Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea, an upcoming sitcom based on her book of the same name. Although she is a prominent figure in the world of entertainment, she acknowledges that she is not considered a media darling.
“I don’t know if I’m going to be what people call mainstream, ever,” she admitted. “My personality is just too obnoxious.”
