Classic arcade game Space Invaders headed to the big screen

Get ready for a wave of '80s nostalgia: Classic arcade game Space Invaders is heading to the big screen.

Before video games were revered for their state-of-the-art graphics or knee-deep mythologies, there were simple shooter arcade games, like Taito and Midway's Space Invaders, which The Hollywood Reporter says holds the high honor of the Guinness Book of World Records' top arcade game of all time.

The premise is simple: Rows of aliens scroll down the screen and the player attempts to shoot them and avoid, well, a space invasion. There's no trying to read a criminal's face expression in 1940s L.A., no slick racing cars and the aliens aren't nearly on a Halo level of complexity.

Still, Lorenzo di Bonaventura is determined to bring the 1978 game to theaters and has teamed up with Odd Lot's Gigi Pritzer to produce a big screen adaptation, according to Cinema Blend.

The producers are on the hunt for a director and writers, who will have to craft a story basically from scratch.

The Hollywood Reporter makes a good point, however, when they mention that creating their own mythology isn't necessarily a bad thing, because that keeps fans from being turned off by any small details that could be changed or modified.

Although the project is still in very early stages, di Bonaventura has had previous success with turning '80s pop culture staples into successful movie ventures -- he served as a producer for both Transformers and G.I. Joe.
