Clijsters Wins US Open

The New York Times reports that Kim Clijsters defeated No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki to win the women's US Open. Clijsters, who had been unranked prior to the tournament, has jumped to No. 19 in the rankings. During her 27-month retirement, Clijsters got married and had a child.

According to CBS News, Clijsters said on an appearance on "The Early Show" that winning the tournament came as such a surprise to her, as she originally did not plan to come out of retirement.

The New York Daily News states that the unranked Belgian had to win a wild card just to compete in the tournament.
