Coca-Cola Gets Sued
According to Reuters, on Wednesday, a consumer group known as the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), filed a lawsuit against Coca-Cola claiming that the company was trying to make Coke-owned VitaminWater appear as a healthy alternative to soda in their ads.
According to a statement made by nutritionists working for CSPI, "The 33 grams of sugar in each bottle of VitaminWater do more to promote obesity, diabetes and other health problems than the vitamins in the drinks do to perform the advertised benefits listed on the bottles."
Coke is also under fire for labeling the flavors of its drink with health-themed buzz words such as "defense" and "endurance."
The Coca-Cola Company feels that this claim is ridiculous and that their products are properly labeled to include all the nutritional information. Spokesperson for Coke, Diana Garza Ciarlante, thinks that this suit is merely an attempt by CSPI to increase its own popularity.
The CSPI hopes that Coke will change its advertising strategies for the product, VitaminWater, as well as Diet Coke Plus, the version of Diet Coke that is advertised to include vitamins and nutrients.
The bottom line: Soda is still not healthy, no matter how many additional vitamins are added to it.
