Coldplay Settles Lawsuit

Coldplay comes to a settlement agreement with Joe Satriani

Joe Satriani filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Coldplay and on Tuesday the dispute was settled for an agreed amount between both parties. A federal judge dismissed the plagiarism suit. The British rockers were sued by Satriani last December alleging that the song "Viva La Vida" took from his song "If I Could Fly".

The order of U.S District judge Dean Pregerson suggested a settlement. Also the dismissal was with prejudice; Coldplay cannot be sued by Joe Satriani again for the same reason.

The quartet denied any copyright-infringement stating that the similarity in the two songs was "entirely coincidental and just as surprising to us as to him" according to E Online.

Guitarist Satriani isn't the first artist to feel that the Grammy- wining "Viva La Vida" was too close to their song. Cat Stevens (now Yusef Islam) claimed that the song in question was ripped from his 1973 song "Foreigners Suite".
