Coldplay Will Stroll to #1 Album
Coldplay earned their first number one single ever Thursday, and first-day sales forecast that the British band will claim the top spot on the charts next week.
Part of the reason for "Viva La Vida's" success (their single) is because it has been featured for commercials for iTunes. It jumped to the top spot on the Billboard charts after selling 246,000 digital copies on iTunes.
The band's album, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, their fourth, will easily grasp the top spot from Lil' Wayne (who sold over 1,000,000 copies this past week).
A source told the Associated Press that Coldplay's new album is expected to sell somewhere between 700,000 and 750,000 units by Sunday. Their previous album, X&Y, also debuted at number one, selling 737,000 units. It spent three weeks at number one.
Interestingly enough, if Coldplay's new album sells in excess of 700,000 copies, it will be the first time since 2005 that two albums sold more than 700,000 copies. The last time it occurred was when 50 Cent's The Massacre sold over 700,000 two weeks in a row.
