The Color Purple Opens on Broadway

The Color Purple, based on the best selling book by Alice Walker, and the Academy Award winning film by Steven Spielberg now reinvents itself as a musical.

Officially opening on Broadway tonight, The Color Purple features much of the same cast from its regional engagements. LaChanze will star as Celie, the main character, Felicia Fields plays Sofia, and Kingsley Leggs will once again perform the role of Mister. Gary Griffin directs and Brenda Russell has written the musical score which includes gospel, pop, ragtime, and blues music.

The opening of tonight's musical is sure to be a star-studded event because of Oprah Winfrey's involvement.
