Comic Book Movies Aren't Only for Superheros

The new trend in movies is non-superhero comic book movie adaptations.

The silver screen has a new infatuation with comic books, but Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Batman aren't the only comic books to obtain movie status. This month, the theaters are displaying two new movies based on comic books, "Whiteout" and "Surrogates." During the next couple of weeks, the trend of non-superhero comic book movies will continue.

This weekend will start the new set of installments for the hero-free comic book-based movies with "Whiteout," starring Kate Beckinsale, and on September 25, Bruce Willis will star in "Surrogates."

Most moviegoers have not realized the surge of comic book movies. In the past these movies may have been unseen as a comic book, such as "V for Vendetta." Movies like "Watchmen," "300" and "Sin City" have been closely translated from comic book to movie.

Greg Rucka, who wrote "Whiteout" in 1998, along with a sequel ("Whiteout: Melt") for Oni Press, has said, "Hollywood has been turned onto comics in a way that they actually haven't been before," based on a report from MSNBC.
