The movie that united Hollywood’s most beautiful and famous actors of our time comes to DVD.
Nine follows the life of world famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress ( Penelope Cruz ), his film star muse ( Nicole Kidman ), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench), a young American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson) and his mother (Sophia Loren).
The original 1982 Broadway production of Nine, was nominated for twelve Tony Awards and won five, including Best Musical. The original was directed by Tommy Tune, choreographed by Thommie Walsh. It starred Raúl Juliá with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and book by Arthur Kopit.
The 2003 Broadway revival of Nine received eight Tony Award nominations and won two, including Best Revival of a Musical. Now in its big screen version, the film earned Penelope Cruz her second Academy Award nomination for Best Actress as well as earning nominations for Art Direction, Costume Design and Music (Original Song).
Despite recognition from the Academy, Nine failed to impress A. O. Scott of The New York Times who says:
“Mr. Day-Lewis does not overdo the Italian-ness, and the sardonic smile playing around his mouth may be a sign of what he thinks of it all. Ms. Cotillard attains a measure of wounded dignity as Louisa, Guido’s former leading lady and much-betrayed wife. She is not spared the striptease obligations that fall to every other female character, but at least her big song is not splintered by the clumsy, mechanical cross-cutting that seems to be Mr. Marshall’s attempt to fuse choreographic energy with cinematic brio.”
