Concert Goers Find Irony In Wall At U2 Berlin Concert
U2 played a free concert on Thursday in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
Some highlights from the 30 minute show include the band playing most of their hits including "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "One", and a surprise duet with Jay-Z covering Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up".
Some of the concert was televised as part of the MTV European Music Awards. MTV were the organizers of the show. MTV worked with a promoter from Berlin, and police to build a temporary fence around the venue where the Berlin Wall used to stand. The fence was installed to ensure the safety of those in attendance, as well as residents of the area.
The wall drew some controversy due to the fact that the 10,000 fans in attendance had their view obstructed by the fence draped with a white tarp. Those that could not get in the area, lined the streets and some were completely unable to see the free show.
Louis-Pierre Boily a fan unable to get in due to not having a ticket stated, "It's completely ridiculous that they are blocking the view. I thought it's a free show, but MTV probably wants people to watch it on TV to get their ratings up" according to TheAssociatedPress.com.
Tourists and Berliners found it ironic that a concert promoting the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 would have a wall built around the stage that unfortunately blocked some from viewing.
RMP, the publicist company for U2, declined to comment about the fence.
