Controversy Stirs Over 'Transformer' Twins

The sequel brings in $16 million after the first night, but many did not approve of the movie.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, directed by Michael Bay, generally did not get good reviews.

Among the many terrible reviews of the movie, Peter Travers for Rolling Stone wrote that it is a "hunkajunk," due to Bay "telling a story with … striking, shrieking incoherence.

"I know there are still 17 months to go, but I'm thinking Transformers 2 has a shot at the title Worst Movie of the Decade."

Many of the reviews included disgust with twin robots Skids and Mudflap, who speak slang to each other, because of their stereotypical nature. Many find this similar to Jar Jar Binks from "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace", an alien who resembled a Rastafarian man.

A New York Times film critic said the questionable characters were, "conspicuously cartoonish, so-called black voices that indicate that minstrelsy remains as much in fashion in Hollywood as when, well, Jar Jar Binks was set loose by George Lucas."

Bay denies the critics who believe the characters are racist.

"We're just putting more personality in," he said. "I don't know if it's stereotypes."

Even though the movie had awful reviews, the midnight showings made $16 million; the most money made on a Wednesday midnight opening, according to Reuters.

Travers wrote: "I know it's popular. So is junk food, and they both poison your insides and rot your brain."
