Could 'Dear John' Be the Movie to Take Down 'Avatar'?

According to critics, the Nicholas Sparks inspired romance 'Dear John' could claim the top spot at this week's box office from the record breaking 'Avatar'

For seven weeks, James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar has conquered the box office. This past Tuesday, the film claimed the title of highest domestic sales in history from Cameron’s last epic film, Titanic, with approximately $601.1 million. It has also gone on to gross over $2 billion in international receipts. The international record also previously belonged to Titanic’s historical romance.

Critics, however, doubt that Avatar will be able to sink Titanic’s record of 15 consecutive weeks in the top spot at the box office. In fact, it is questioned whether or not Cameron’s blockbuster can hold onto the top spot this weekend. The film’s biggest competition seems to be Dear John, a film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel. One of the biggest reasons Avatar may lose its top spot is partially due to the Super Bowl. Targeted at men, Avatar’s biggest demographic is also the Super Bowl’s widest audience. Dear John is sure to attract a heavy female audience wishing to escape from the mania surrounding the Super Bowl. Despite its romantic nature, there is also said to be a compelling father and son relationship featured in the film that many men will be able to identify with.

Despite these claims, it also must be noted that Avatar’s impressive nine Oscar nominations should only help its box office receipts.
