Cowell in Negotiations to Bring "X-Factor" to U.S.

X-Factor to be coming to U.S.? Cowell thinks so.

In an effort to maintain his presence in the U.S. longer than the extent of his "American Idol" contract, Simon Cowell is currently in talks with FOX to bring the hugely successful British music competition, "X-Factor," across the Atlantic.

With questions and speculation swirling last summer about Cowell's "Idol" contract, this new agreement with FOX would apparently keep Cowell on "Idol" for at least another three seasons (including this upcoming season), as well introduce viewers to the new talent competition, with Cowell as Executive Producer and possibly judge.

Apparently, FOX had originally declined negotiations when Cowell brought the idea to the table. FOX believed that "Factor" was so similar to "Idol" that it could potentially tarnish their "Idol" empire. Although both shows are similar in format, the key difference is that "Factor" allows music groups, as well as solo artists, to compete on the show, whereas "Idol" does not allow groups to compete.

The current expectation is that "Factor" would air during "Idol's" off-seasons, which is typically June-December, so as not to create a conflict of interest for the FOX network.

"In the UK, there is more than one type of music show running throughout the year," Cowell said back in April in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "And I think the same thing could happen here, because for the fall, nothing really happens."
