'Criminal Minds' recap 'True Genius'

Lee Allport

We open the Criminal Minds episode True Genius with a young couple making out in a car. Suddenly a man in black begins shooting them and draws a zodiac symbol on their car.

Patricia Cornwell is speaking about her new book and has Spencer as a guest speaker. Unfortunately and as usual, no one understands what he is saying. It's awkward for all involved. He does however meet the founder of Nanavex, a company that is going to change the world. It makes me wonder if this might be one of the ways the writers will tease us into wondering if Spencer will stay next season when Gubler's contract is up.

The team meets up to talk about the above murder and discuss whether we are after the real Zodiac killer or a copycat. They head off to San Francisco.

The team arrives at the scene of the crime. Spencer is certain it isn't the real zodiac. He isn't sure why he knows, because sometimes he can't really explain it.

Morgan and Rossi visit a Detective who worked on the case who is now an elderly man suffering from Parkinsons. The Detective can't really talk to them but luckily there are man boxes of evidence around so that they can look through everything.

We're at some type of engagement luncheon where a man named Caleb is giving a speech to the room about the Groom named Harvey and how they used to be best friends. It is very sweet but it is most obvious Caleb loves Harvey and considers them soul mates. He invites Harvey to Vegas for a bachelor party.

Turns out this is definitely not the real Zodiac. Blood types and prints did not match up. However Spencer finds a hidden message from the killer in comments of a local newspaper's online story. It seems the killer is telling them exactly where he will strike next. The police do a stakeout and a man does arrive, however he is only holding a letter address to Spencer. It says "You aren't as smart as you think you are".

They find the true crime scene and realize the killer is under a time pressure he has no control of. He is not following the Zodiac's time frame and is killing far too quickly. When the profile is given Hotch tells them this copycat's message is pointed at a woman with who he is obsessed. The women killed are surrogates for her. He is trying to prove his love and is copying the Zodiac to feel famous. He is a physically fit male in his early 30's and is highly intelligent but he has a low level job with few friends. Mainly he just fantasizes about a better life. Also, the rate of his kills is showing us he is about to lose the object of his desire.

Harvey's wife calls Caleb and asks him to meet her. When he arrives she says she is planning to build Harvey a man cave and wanted to know what Caleb thinks he'd like to be put inside. Caleb gets a bit flustered and tells her Harvey would hate it. She becomes hurt and he apologizes, saying all her ever wanted was for her to like him. She makes an excuse and leaves.

Spencer is upset, Emily wants to know what is wrong. He asks her if she lived up to expectations. She says she beat them, she figured she'd be a bored socialite by the time she was 25. Spencer says he failed himself, he thought he'd cure schizophrenia by 25. Emily tells him to relax, he has a lot of time to do the things he thought he would. Then Emily teases him and messes with the paper he was working on. In doing so she helps him unlock a code. Long story, or confusing explanation short, the code leads Spencer to a newspaper ad that says "You could do better". Now they must find out who these messages have been left for.

New murder scene, a cab driver has been shot from outside the cab. Different from how the Zodiac killed his cab driver. They find another picture and a void in blood splatter, meaning someone else was at the scene. They believe he or she was kidnapped.

Caleb and Harvey are on the way to Vegas and the conversation is already a bit strained. Caleb has a hard time with Marissa choosing Harvey. Harvey is also a "big shot" where Caleb is not. It seems Caleb and Harvey were obsessed with the idea of catching the zodiac killer. Caleb wants to try and catch this copycat. Harvey isn't as into it but does agree.

They begin to profile the killer and the crime scene. Harvey seems to be a bit more interested than we thought. As they continue their game they actually find Marissa locked in a storage freezer. Obviously Harvey is extremely upset and Caleb is obviously obsessed with Harvey. Caleb tells Marissa that he and Harvey murdered a 7-year-old boy when they were 15.

The team has figured out that the killer is murdering people based on the coordinates of a famous chess game. Penelope runs this information and finds Caleb and Harvey who fit the profile, both geniuses, both chess champions.

The team arrives and Spencer begins trying to talk to the men. At first it seems Caleb is the crazy one but after Spencer digs his brainiac claws into the situation it is soon uncovered that it's actually Harvey. He is the dominant, the decision maker. He didn't have anything to do with these recent murders, but he had everything to do with the murder of a little boy. Both he and Caleb are taken into custody. Pretty much making this the worst day ever for the bride to be.

At the end of the episode the team throws a 30th Birthday Party for Spencer Reid. Emily realized they missed his 30th earlier in the episode so they do their best to make up for it. In my opinion Spencer is starting to mentally break down. This is my other idea of how they might play out Spencer's leaving Season 7 if Matthew Gray Gubler does not renew his contract.
