Cruise, Abrams sign on as producers of 'MI4'
According to UPI.com, Tom Cruise and J. J. Abrams have agreed to produce "Mission: Impossible IV" for Paramount Pictures, and it has been tentatively slated for a 2011 release.
It is currently unknown whether or not Cruise will reprise his role as protagonist Ethan Hunt, or if the series will be rebooted with a new cast, according to the Associated Press. Paramount spokeswoman Katie Martin Kelley said that Cruise and Abrams are "only attached as producers at this point."
In an article for the Hollywood Reporter, Jay A. Fernandez pointed out that Abrams has had previous involvement in the series, directing Cruise in "Mission: Impossible III" back in 2006. Though he is in another role this time around, Fernandez suggested that Abrams and Cruise may "reconceive" the film in a way that is more similar to the ensemble approach of the TV series it is based on, possibly relieving the need for Cruise to serve as the star of the film again.
