Cynthia Nixon Receives Award From Gay Media Group
At a Saturday night gala highlighting gay marriage rights, the gay media group GLADD honored Cynthia Nixon for her work.
Nixon accepted her award at the 21st annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards, and mentioned in her acceptance speech how she is helping to bring marriage back to its fundamentals.
Additionally, the ABC drama Nixon is a part of, Brothers and Sisters-- a show about a gay couple planning on starting a family-- won the outstanding drama series award.
Nixon won the Vito Russo Award, which is named after the late gay activist and film historian. In 2009, Nixon revealed at a gay marriage rally that she was engaged to her girlfriend, an education activist.
GLADD was founded more than 20 years ago, and helps present positive images of the lives of gay people in a time where AIDS coverage and slurs are still prevalent.
Sigourney Weaver accepted an award for her work in Lifetime's Prayers for Bobby for outstanding TV miniseries, where she plays a 1970's religious mother who has a hard time accepting her gay son.
Joy Behar, co-host of ABC's The View was honored with an excellence in media award for raising awareness of gay rights on a popular daytime television show.
MSNBC, The New York Times, NBC, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and several other news coverage sites were awarded for their coverage of gay and lesbian issues.
