After a week of emotional turns, the professionals are hoping that the celebrities can continue to channel their emotions but to music that didn't connect to them. This week, the contestants had to tackle movie scores, probably influenced by the success of the Harry Potter Viennese Waltz last season. Since the theme was all about scores, we introduced the couples descending from the sides of the stage like it was Season 12 to emphasize the band.
We started the night with a bit of filler, opening with the dance troupe and some of the pros. All it did was remind me how much I miss Louis Van Amstel this season. I appreciated the fire element, though I'm sure we'd never see it in the middle of the dance floor for a celebrity because they would probably trip over it and catch on fire. Shirtless men with light sabers just look wrong. There was more filler between some scenes, but I'm sure Cher wasn't that impressed in the audience.
There was extra filler for each performance including elaborate ways to torture the professionals, but nothing too distracting.
Chynna & Tony - Tango - Chynna was struck with a bit of fear because of the "shocking" elimination. She put too much stress on herself and asked Tony too many questions. After the commercial break, the couple began with Tony descending from the ceiling. While I thought the Matrix style background was distracting, what was more distracting was the amount of awkward time Chynna stood around. She looked like she was being dragged around a lot during the performance and lost all her focus halfway through the dance.
Len understood that the professionals would probably have the most trouble with the character, but emphasized that everything went wrong and she panicked. Bruno thought she was hot but she lost the plot. Carrie Ann appreciated that she didn't lose her composure. Score: 21 (7,7,7).
David & Kym - Paso Doble - Kym emphasized David's movie star status and he tried his best to keep up with Kym. He admitted to having dyslexia and was confused by several instructions. David started with swinging and unnecessary whip usages. The paso started off with energy but some of David's moves lacked the sharpness that is associated with a Paso. He went through all the movements and even if he slightly slipped at the end, he didn't blank-out.
Bruno made some flirty motions toward David, but warned him about his stability. Carrie Ann loved the bravado and charisma in his dancing. Len liked the attitude, but thought the whole dance didn't have shape that he needed the Paso to be. Score: 23 (8,7,8).
Carson & Anna - Viennese Waltz - Carson was scared about the pirates theme, but then realized that he was a pirate. Anna brought in a stunt man, Storm, to give an epic sword fight. The opening began quite silly, but I think Carson's bad acting made everything better. They were thrown off by the random sword not flying in the correct position. The choreography had a very drunk pirate sensibility, but because of the theme, Carson's flailing worked.
Carrie Ann thought the performance was butch, but the technique was questionable. Len thought the performance was terrible because there was no quality or technique. Bruno thought that the performance was bonkers in an amazing way. Score: 20 (7,6,7).
Nancy & Tristan - Paso Doble - We watched Nancy on her show and Tristan was hoping that he could get the emotion from her show with the paso. Nancy understood the aggression of the dance, but didn't want to be a bull. The theme was a bit more epic than Nancy Grace, but she did her best to keep with the spirit of the music. There were definite moments where Nancy looked like she was being dragged around, but she showed the determination of the paso. She tried a split at the end, but it didn't work as wonderfully as planned.
Len didn't think the performance was exciting and lacked expression. Bruno thought that she needed more character and she needed to be stronger. Carrie Ann appreciates the technique, but she needed to connect with the audience. Score: 21 (7,7,7).
Hope & Maks - Foxtrot - Hope had music from Toy Story, but Maks wasn't that friendly as their song said. She admitted to thinking too hard about every detail and work on weaknesses. The dance started off with a lot of childish spirit, but when they got in hold I thought that Hope did a great job. I thought she handled herself well with the high amounts of spinning that Maks put into the choreography.
Bruno thought the performance was nice. Carrie Ann felt the performance was refreshing. Len knows that Hope has the potential, but she needs to work harder and continue to polish her moves. Score: 24 (8,8,8).
Rob & Cheryl - Paso Doble - Rob knew that he had to transform his personal Clark Kent into the Superman he wants to be. He's grown through the past few weeks and Cheryl appreciates the hard work. The couple started with the strength of the Superman theme, but the parts where he wasn't in hold could have been stronger. I found it funny that this was Cheryl's second Superman-related theme.
Carrie Ann loved Rob's manly movements. Len thought the performance was okay, but he needed strength. Bruno thought while he has musicality, he needed to be more assertive. Score: 24 (8,8,8).
Ricki & Derek - Tango - Ricki and Derek were really confused by the time signature of the Psycho theme and because of Derek's confusion, Ricki was lost. She struggled with the technique which made her panic. The performance started with a silhouetted movement, but when the couple got to dancing the hold was good. There were occasional moments where Ricki couldn't get up from the floor as graceful as someone younger than her, but she had the right passion and precision to her.
Len thought that Ricki delivered, but she occasionally lost her neck. Bruno thought the performance was a blockbuster. Carrie Ann thought the performance was brilliance. Score: 29 (10,9,10)
Chaz & Lacey - Paso Doble - Chaz loved Rocky, because he represented the underdog. Lacey tried her best to give boxing inspired instructions. She got Richard Simmons to help with endurance and we were given a cheesy boxing montage. Chaz started off with some awkward coat removal of Lacey, but he was moving a lot faster than he ever did before. Sure most of his choreography still was a lot of standing in place, but he's trying his hardest to keep up with the intensity of the song. I was afraid that Chaz would fall going up the stairs, but he made it to the end.
Bruno loved his fighting spirit. Carrie Ann was rooting for Chaz. Len thought the dance was his best, but still wasn't amazing. Score: 21 (7,7,7).
J. R. & Karina - Foxtrot - After having an emotional week, J. R. knew that he had a clean slate. Karina wanted to push J. R. as hard as possible so she brought in Nick Kosovich to teach him the manly movements. I find that a bit unfair because everyone else didn't get that privilege. J. R. emerged in a pink outfit and was the best of the night out of hold. He exuded a confidence in his dancing that none of the male celebrities have reached. Karina ended with a minor lift, but I wasn't sure if it would have been counted since it was part of the end.
Carrie Ann thought the performance was good, but the performance didn't need humor. Len thought he was the best male dancer of the night. Bruno thought the subtle humor worked well and he was versatile. Score: 26 (8,9,9).
Final Scores:
High
Ricki & Derek - 29
J. R. & Karina - 26
Middle
Hope & Maks - 24
Rob & Cheryl - 24
David & Kym - 23
Low
Chynna & Tony - 21
Nancy & Tristan - 21
Chaz & Lacey - 21
Carson & Anna - 20
It really looks like Chynna is in a lot of trouble if Carson, Nancy, and Chaz have all been near the bottom but have survived the past weeks. Her performing first didn't help.
